On 15th August every year, we celebrate our Independence Day. This year too we celebrate our 75th Independence Day with mixed feelings. The feeling of joy and happiness as we won medals at the Olympic games and with heartache as we miss our loved ones due to the pandemic.

The different states of India were depicted by the students of Grade 1, whereas the students of Grade 2 came dressed as ‘Freedom Fighters’ and spoke a few sentences about them.

Grade 3 had a poem recitation competition where students recited poems on our motherland India. The students of Grades 4 and 5 could choose between elocution and declamation. It was a proud moment for us to hear their speeches based on: ‘What freedom means to me as a nine or a ten-year-old, India of my dreams and My favourite freedom fighter. Truly, patriotism is instilled at a tender age. All students were dressed in tricolour clothes.

Throughout the week the primary students enjoyed ‘Cooking without Fire’ making the tricolour Choco balls, tricolour fruit salad decoration’ and tricolour wheel sandwiches; activities that reminded us of our tricolour flag. To conclude our students’ thoughts and wishes are echoed in Shahid Bhagat Singh’s quote” May the sun in his course, visit no land more free, more happy, more lovely than this country.”

Hindi Activity-Scientific Article Writing

“Creativity doesn’t wait for the perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moment out of ordinary  ones.” – Bruce Garrabrandt

The students of MBIS Grade 8 were introduced to the concept of ‘Scientific Article’ Writing in Hindi Class. Since this style of writing involves research hints, the students were asked to come up with innovative ideas to present a “Health Awareness Drive” via their articles. This activity tapped on the creative and innovative skills of the student and they came up with an idea for an awareness drive to eliminate mosquitoes to ensure the safety of people’s health within their community. The innovation and interesting point in the activity were to not send mosquito repellent but rather incorporate the repellent mixture into the ink that is used to print newspapers, as they are a medium of contact for most households. This scientific procedure was the premise for their activity. As much as it developed the student’s language skills it also enhanced students to think out of the box to help their community.

Peace Day Activity - Pre-primary and Primary

“Peace begins with a smile. Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”— Mother Teresa

The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly for strengthening the standards of peace. Since 1981, September 21 has been observed as the International Day of Peace also known as World Peace Day around the world. At MBIS, the students of the Pre-Primary and Primary section celebrated the International Day of Peace on Tuesday, September 21. We began the day smiling at each other. This entire week had been designed to discuss various aspects of peace culminating in an activity that symbolizes peace. It was a great joy to hearten year olds utter these words as they discussed what peace personally meant to them: harmony, adjustment, friendship, freedom from disturbance, no discrimination, no racism, no wars, no fighting, etc. We were also proud to hear that to have peace in our surroundings one needs to be respectful, polite, understanding, and show empathy towards one another. The most beautiful thought by one of them was that to have peace everywhere we had to first have peace within ourselves.

So we concluded our Peace Week with this quote “If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.”— Thich Nhat Hanh

Storytelling has always been one of the most enriching forms of creating impact in the minds of readers and listeners alike. We at MBIS understand the power of stories and their impact on young minds. The storytelling session was a hit as it created a far greater impression on kids than the usual preaching ever does, simultaneously engaging various parts of the mind like the cognitive, the creative, and the emotional.

Thanksgiving Day Activity by Students of Grade 8 and 11

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.

Similarly named festival holidays to occur in Germany and Japan. Being thankful in all situations helps us develop our trust in God and helps us to be humble. While much of our gratitude is related to a positive experience, we have to learn to appreciate the good and the bad.

Thanking God in difficult situations can also help us appreciate the good times more.

Vocabulary Activity by Primary Section

Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process and contributes greatly to a student’s comprehension. Since comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading, the importance of vocabulary development cannot be overestimated. A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication — listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Reading is a great activity to develop vocabulary. At MBIS we helped children to create an activity during their Diwali break, where they picked up two new words every day from the book they read. The students then wrote down their meanings and learnt them. The activity not only helped students to enhance their interest in learning new words but also brought out their creativity which is much appreciated.
